Why drifting feels so good in arcade racers

September 2, 2026 · Lukas Vandenberghe

Arcade racers don't chase realism, they chase feel, and drifting is the heart of it. The whole design is a little feedback loop: drift to earn boost, spend boost to go faster, repeat. When it's tuned well it becomes almost hypnotic.

The skill is knowing when to break a drift. Hold too long and you scrub speed; let go too early and you leave boost on the table. Good players read the next corner and set up the drift before they're in it.

On a phone, I almost always prefer touch controls over tilt for this. Tilt looks cool but touch gives you the precise button feathering these games live on.

My advice: don't boost the moment your bar fills. Save it for straights and let it stack. That patience is what separates a clean lap from a wall full of dents.
