Five mistakes people make in the first hour of a new game

April 3, 2026 · Lukas Vandenberghe

Every time I start a new mobile game I catch myself making the same early mistakes, and I bet I'm not alone. The first hour is where good habits are cheap and bad ones stick.

First, skipping the tutorial. I get it, tutorials can drag, but half the time they explain a mechanic you'll spend the next hour confused about. Sit through it once.

Second, hoarding resources. Whether it's potions in an RPG or boost in a racer, saving 'for later' usually means never. Spend and learn.

Third, ignoring settings. Two minutes flipping through controls and audio options can transform how a game feels. I've turned mediocre first impressions around just by switching to touch controls.

Finally, rushing. Games reveal themselves slowly. The ones that felt shallow to me at first often turned out to be the ones I'd underrated. Give them room.
